The Pros & Cons: Soldering Your Engagement Ring & Wedding Band Together

Increasing in popularity in recent years, many brides are choosing to get their engagement ring and wedding band soldered together to create a bridal set. Soldering your wedding bands together essentially is connecting the metals of both bands together. While this option does work very well for some brides who live a certain lifestyle, it may not be the right option for everyone.

There are some unique advantages and disadvantages to having your rings soldered together. Check out our top pros and cons of soldering your engagement ring and wedding band together:

Pros:

1. Less Metal Maintenance

When you have two different metal rings, they often rub up against each other, creating friction and ultimately wearing down each ring. This leads to you needing to get your rings re-plated more often. But when you solder your engagement ring and wedding band together, the two rings stop rubbing up against each other. This means less maintenance for you and more money saved in the long run.

2. A More Comfortable Fit

Engagement rings and wedding rings have a tendency to spin around on your finger, causing your center diamond to be off-center and hit into your other fingers or your band to move around, pinching the skin that gets stuck in between the two rings. When you solder your rings together, you avoid these uncomfortable scenarios all together.

3. The Two Rings Will Always Line Up Perfectly

If you like things lined up perfectly like many of us, it may be visually annoying to see that your five-stone wedding band isn't sitting squarely against your engagement ring, or your channel set diamonds on your wedding band that were meant to match perfectly with the channel on your engagement ring are not lined up at all. When you solder your rings together, you don't have to worry about one moving to the side and not matching up with the other. The two rings will always look perfect.

Cons:

1. You Always Have To Wear The Two Rings Together

Consider your lifestyle for you a second. If you lift weights, are always getting your hands dirty, or like to just wear certain pieces when it comes to wearing your jewelry in different situations, then you probably would not want to solder your wedding band and engagement ring together. Especially in occupations that require you to wear only your wedding band for safety reasons, having your rings together may just not fit into your everyday schedule.

Not only is your lifestyle a consideration, but there are also many situations where you'd want to take off your engagement ring in the future. In some situations you'd want to have the option to wear just your band alone.

2. You Are Not Able To Mix and Match

If you like the idea of being able to add different bands to the ring throughout the years, or mix and match your bands to your engagement ring, then soldering your rings together may not be the best option for you. By soldering the rings together, you completely lose the versatility that having a separate band and engagement ring affords you.

3. There Is Potential Damage To The Rings If You Decide To Separate Them Later

While soldering your rings together is completely different from having them welded together and the two rings can potentially be separated after they have been soldered, you definitely risk damaging either ring through the process. This is something that you would definitely need to think about especially if you want to one day pass down either your engagement ring or wedding band as an heirlooms, where having the rings soldered together could create a problem.
