You may already know the birthstone for January is Garnet but have you ever thought about where it came from or what it was used for? If this is news to you, dive deep with us into the history and healing uses for the birthstone Garnet.

Who would have thought the gemstone Garnet and the birthstone for January was actually named after the fruit, Pomegranate. The word “garnet” comes from the 14th century Middle English word granatum, which means “dark red,” and is derived from Latin granatum, which means “seed” as the gemstone also bears resemblance to the red seeds of the pomegranate. When you think of what a pomegranate looks like, it makes sense as both the fruit and the stone are infamous for their deep, saturated red-purple hues. Many gemstones come in other colors and garnets are no exception as they can also be found in green, yellow and purple.

The history of Garnets goes back over 5,000 years to its use in talismans and weapons. Ancient warriors would incorporate garnet stones on their weapons, shields, and armor as a talisman for protection in battle. The ancient Egyptians are credited with first discovering this gemstone, and  Egyptian pharaohs wore garnet-studded necklaces and called the red gemstones a “symbol of life.” But it was the ancient Romans that are known for considering the Garnet to be one of their favorite precious stones and they would even use garnet signet rings to stamp wax seals on important documents.

Wearing a gemstone for your birth month can bring you luck and happiness. In addition to this, garnet is also good for attracting success and activating passion. Garnet’s have a way of removing energy blocks that may be keeping you from reaching your goals whether they be in life or in your profession.
