When it comes to luck, every country around the world has their own beliefs and superstitions. In India, elephants are seen as symbols of good luck while in Germany it’s pigs. Some good luck symbols, like the scarab or dolphins, date back to ancient times while others find their roots in the middle ages. No matter where you come from, it never hurts to appreciate the good luck beliefs of other cultures. Plus, who doesn’t need another excuse to add to their jewelry collection? Read on to learn about our favorite lucky charms and find the piece that’s right for you!

Elephants

Elephants are seen as a symbol of good luck in many countries, especially India. They represent power, stability and wisdom. In Hinduism, elephants are considered sacred. The god Ganesh, one of the most worshipped and well-known deities, even has the head of an elephant. While it is common to have elephant carvings or pictures in the home to bring good luck, actually wearing elephant charms has become a popular practice. In Germany, pigs are seen as a sign of good fortune. During the Middle Ages, having a pig showed you were a family of wealth and prosperity. It indicated that the owners would never go hungry. The common German expression “schwein gehabt” meaning “got lucky there” literally translates to “got pig!” Today people are often gifted a marzipan pig as a form of good luck. In ancient times, after spending months at sea, sailors saw the sight of dolphins swimming next to their ship as a sign that land was nearby.
