Should you shop with your significant other for the ringShopping for and choosing the right engagement ring is a deeply personal decision. It’s complicated too because it has big impact on two people: you (the buyer) and your soon-to-be fiancée.

In our 135 year history, we’ve practically seen it all, and there’s no single formula for doing it right. To help you make the right decision, here are cases in favor of bringing your significant other along vs. doing it on your own:

Why you should bring along your Significant Other

Let’s face it. Bringing her along may seem to take some of the romance out of the process, but that’s not the case!

Think of the advantages. She knows what she wants, and she’ll make sure you choose the ring of her dreams by joining you to shop. You’ll see for yourself how she reacts to different styles, different diamond qualities and which sizes look great on her hand.

Buying a diamond ring can often take multiple visits to a store, so you can still make the final decision on your own and you can still surprise her with your final choice.

Worried about being unromantic? Then go overboard in planning the proposal and make sure that event is full of amazing surprises. Times have changed… we often live with our boyfriends and girlfriends before proposing, so it’s ok to be modern and shop together.

Why you should not shop with your Significant Other

There aren’t many true surprises in life, so why not take advantage of the chance to truly surprise her with the right engagement ring. It’s the traditional way to go and it adds a level of excitement to an already wonderful moment: the proposal.

Plus, there are plenty of ways to find out exactly what she wants, without bringing her along. Pay attention to comments she makes about rings or ask her what she thinks of a friend’s engagement ring. You’ll be amazed how much she’ll volunteer if you’re paying attention: Her ring is too big! Too small! Too simple! Too ornate! I prefer square diamonds to round! Etc. You can also turn to her family or friends to get a feel… best friends, mothers and sisters always know exactly what she wants.

Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts too because you know plenty about her taste, and you already know if she’s a traditional girl, a trendy girl or a glamour girl. The right jeweler will help you translate her taste in clothes and other jewelry into her taste for an engagement ring. Think of it this way: She’s focused on starting the next chapter of your life together, and she’ll love whatever you give her. If this seems right, go for the traditional route and surprise her!
