Although Malaya Garnet resembles other garnets, the best of the breed have a distinctive pure-orange color. In fact, one stone importer jokes that most true-color malayas should come stamped “Sunkist” because their color is exactly that of a California orange. Occasionally, however, malayas possess a beautiful pinkish orange which dealers aptly describe as “peach”. Due to the rarity of these peach-colored stones, prices for them in are higher than the pure-orange variety when they are clean and well cut.
The sapphire deposits of Kashmir are still well known in the gem industry, despite the fact that the peak production from this area mostly took place in a relatively short period at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At present, the world record price-per-carat for sapphire at auction was achieved by a sapphire from Kashmir in a ring, which sold for more than $175,000 per carat (more than $3.4 million in total) in May 2013.
