In today's technology crazy market, companies are racing to develop the next big "smart-product." There are hundreds of new computer-driven products being designed, but many people believe that the smart watch is the next big smart-product category.

Breitling B55 Connected WatchCompanies such as Samsung and Apple have already designed their versions of the smart watch and have shown us what features they believe to be essential. Touch screens and apps that allow communication between timepieces are certainly new to the watch market, but it's still too early to say that these are functions consumers want in their watch.

Keeping current with the times, leading Swiss watchmaker Breitling has just announced a new "connected watch" model named the B55 Connected. This simplified take on the smart watch may help to shape the way we view the product category.

When Breitling first started designing watches, their goal was to design the ultimate aviation instrument. They did this by putting a large focus on developing the ultra precise chronograph movement.

After over 130 years of innovation, Breitling is now regarded as a crucial part in the development of the wrist chronograph and is one of the only watch makers to offer a mechanical chronograph in-house movement.

What Is A Connected Watch?

Once smart watches hit the market, Breitling had to decide if it would adopt computer chips to drive the watch, or stick with the highly precise chronograph technology they had spent so long developing. This was an easy choice for the chronograph specialists who just unveiled their new Caliber B55 movement this week at Baselworld 2015.

The Caliber B55 is a new breed of chronograph movements that utilizes Bluetooth capabilities to connect the watch to a users smart phone. The Caliber B55 is being released for the first time in the Breitling B55 Connected, a watch that promises to be the ultimate pilot's tool.

The B55 Connected is part of a new category of watches called the "connected watch," which focuses on communication between your watch and mobile device. This is slightly different than the smart watch category, as the connected watch doesn't have the smart phone inspired features such as watch to watch communication or a touch screen.

You might be wondering what the point of a communication channel between your watch and smart phone is. Well, the possibilities are endless and only time will tell what features companies start developing. Let's take a look at the B55 Connected and see how Breitling has used this new technology to add new features to their watch.

What Can The Breitling B55 Connected Do?

True to their roots, when Breitling developed the B55 Connected, their goal was to improve the aviation industry's timepiece. They utilize the Caliber B55 movement to make many essential features in a watch more convenient for a pilot to use.

These features include:

  • Chronoflight time log
  • Electronic tachometer
  • Count down / Count up system
  • Mission elapsed time
  • Aviation-oriented “chrono flight” device that records flight times while memorizing the take-off time, landing time and date
  • Analog and two digital displays
  • Backlighting that can be activated by turning wrist 35 degrees
  • Rechargeable lithium ion battery with magnetic charger
  • 10 times more accuracy than a standard quartz movement
  • Breitling smart phone app to easily adjust watch settings
  • Wirelessly sync flight data to smart phone
