117th Boston Marathon Winner Lelisa Desisa Presents Championship Medal to City of Boston

Long’s Jewelers is proud of our longstanding partnership with the Boston Athletic Association. We were especially honored to be a part of the Third Annual B.A.A. 10K Race in Boston’s Back Bay on Sunday June 23, 2013, as it was B.A.A.’s first road racing event since this year’s Boston Marathon. The race sold out in just a few short hours, and a field of participants ran with strong support for our City. Before the day’s champions were announced at the awards ceremony on Boston Common, 117th Boston Marathon Winner Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia gifted his championship medal from April’s Boston Marathon to the City of Boston and Mayor Thomas M. Menino in a display of solidarity and support to all who were affected by the attack that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013. Thousands of runners gave a standing ovation after hearing the emotional speech delivered by Desisa.

On his gift to the City of Boston, Desisa commented, “I want people to know, I feel the pain. The pain I have… will encourage me every time when I run.” Desisa continued through a translator, “Sport holds the power to unify and connect people all over the world. Sport should never be used as a battleground.”

On behalf of Ethiopia, several Ethopian runners also donated $8,000 to The One Fund.
